This book shows the current system of pronouns and forms of address in European Portuguese, together with the enormous complexity with which it has been characterised and still exhibits nowadays. Thanks to fieldwork carried out throughout continental Portugal and its archipelagos by means of an innovative method, this study represents the first in-depth research that accounts for one of the most complex and volatile phenomena in Lusophone linguistics and demonstrates that Portugal has been extremely sensitive to politeness.
